Vegan Beauty Product Review - October 2020

Well it has been a while since I've done much beauty product reviewing I wanted to review some products I've been using lately that I LOVE!

The first is very exciting because I've been waiting for an affordable vegan lash serum for years! Now I found one! This Grande Lash-MD I got from Sephora and it comes in a trial size for $40 or the full size for $60. I started with the trail size and in that 8 weeks it was enough to see some impressive results. Sorry my pictures aren't great but you get the idea! I noticed a difference by the 6 week mark. I also bought their brow serum and have seen a difference for sure, very helpful for those patches that haven't been growing back since I plucked them to death in the 90s! I'm definitely going to keep using to see how long I can get them all!

You can really notice the long ones lashes with mascara since my ends are light. This was around the 8 week mark.

My next happy purchase is something very exciting to me! L'Occitane which makes a lot of gorgeous vegan products in France just redid their best selling anti-aging skin care line, Immortelle Divine, with vegan formula. So awesome. I noticed a difference overnight, I used the new Super Extract Divine Serum followed by the Cream and my skin felt amazing in the morning and the blemishes I had the night before were almost gone. Seriously excited about them redoing this line, the eye cream is next, yay!!

DIY Peppermint Lip Scrub

This is so easy to make yourself, and it really works! But don't get addicted, it's pretty tasty!

DIY Peppermint Lip Scrub

Ingredients

2 Tbls Vegan Sugar (preferably caster because it's finer)
1 tsp jojoba oil
1/4 tsp vanilla extract
1-2 drops food grade peppermint essential oil (I used doTERRA*)

Method

Mix the all ingredients together. If you feel like it's liquidy add more sugar, if too dry ad a couple drops more of jojoba oil. You want the consistency of hard wet sand.

Note
*You actually get a free Peppermint Essential oil when you sign up with doTERRA!

Homemade Toothpaste

I got this original recipe from Authority Dental and I used it as a base to create a new one.

Homemade Toothpaste

2 Tbls Baking Soda
2 Tbls Coconut Oil
10 drops of essential oil (Peppermint, Clove, Cinnamon, Eucalyptus, Tea Tree, Rosemary & Wild Orange are good ones to use.)

Method

Heat coconut oil and baking soda on a low heat and until melted.
Whisk until well blended and whisk in the essential oils.
Allow to sit for a few hours or in the fridge to harden.
Keep in an air tight container.

Current Everyday Cosmetic & Body Care Faves - 2019

I realised it's been close to 4 years since I last did a post on my favourite cosmetics and skin care so definitely time for an update! If you need help de-cluttering or organizing your cosmetics, which I definitely do, check out this article from One Pampered Life!

So cosmetics, I'm not a person who has to buy only from a vegan company because I appreciate some companies trying - especially if they are cruelty free to begin with and the more demand the more we will see. Plus not a lot of great brands out there that have ALL vegan cosmetics. I'm a firm believer in you get what you pay for and it's going onto your skin...so in clothing I'll buy thrift but in cosmetics I buy quality!

The ones I'm using at the moment definitely have more to do with specific products than whole brand lines...

COSMETICS

First things first, you need to start with primer! I LOVE the Arbonne and INIKA primer. INIKA is a vegan organic cosmetic brand from Australia but now available in the states online! I tried a sample of the Hourglass Veil Primer too and I really liked it also.

Foundation I've been loving Tarte Amazonian Clay Full Coverage Foundation (their Amazonian Clay range is all vegan as far as I understand it). I didn't love the only vegan concealer Tarte had though so I've been using a brand named Hourglass that I had never heard of but they have quite a lot in their vegan range. Powder I have a Kat Von D Illuminating powder for light coverage and a Tarte Amazonian Clay powder foundation for those heavy coverage days!

Still loving my INIKA bronzer that I use for contouring my cheekbones, I love the loose powder better than the baked but they are both lovely. For blush I still have an old palette by Paula's Choice who sadly don't make cosmetics anymore :(

Eye shadow wise I like a matte colour, I have brown eyes so usually browns, greys and smoky pinks/purples and luckily I still have my Paula's Choice palette. (WHY DID YOU STOP MAKING COSMETICS PAULA'S CHOICE WHYYYY!??!???) I love using the darker browns to colour in my my eyebrows with an angled brush!

I am LOVING the Chantecaille highlighter - I got one in a pack with the mascara. I mix a little in with my foundation and then use some after my whole base is done on the highlight areas and it's magical how flawless my skin looks! Yes this brand is expensive but you really get what you pay for with this brand. Very natural and made in France, mostly vegan! They make cosmetics, skin care and perfume.
I love Kat Von D liners - the Tattoo and Ink liners are vegan and have the most AMAZING precision! I don't like that they are water proof but that seems to be a trend with all cosmetics these days. The Tattoo is thinner so I love it for real detail but the Ink liners have a lot of colour options!

Mascara I still love Arbonne the best but I do really like the Chantecaille one as well. I think I really like the Arbonne brush for getting defined lashes as appose to clumpy. Better Than Sex Mascara by Too Faced is amazing too but I just prefer non-waterproof mascara. I've adding a couple drops of Rosemary EO to my mascara pot as well to help with hair growth and strength!

I'm still using my Lucus' Paw Paw Ointment as my go to chapstick (yes I know it has petroleum jelly in it but I just haven't found anything that works as well). Lipstick wise Kat Von D Studded matte lipsticks are amazing. (The one pictured is Cathedral which I LOVE) They smell divine, go on smooth but dry matte and have some major staying power without feeling dry. I still have some of my Manic Panic lipsticks that I love for colour but they don't seem to do much vegan lipstick anymore :(

SKINCARE

For cleansers I'm using L'Occitane's Reine Blanch Facial Scrub and Divine Cream Cleanser. That Divine cleanser will get rid of all your make up - even your waterproof stuff, it's amazing!

For toner I just use the cheap Witch Hazel because I haven't found the expensive ones to do a better job. I do really like the Andalou cleansing wipes I bought on sale. For face masks once a week I love Andalou Naturals and Eminence Organic Skin Care.

Daily cream I usually use Image Skincare daily moisturiser with SPF 32+ suncreen because it smells divine and makes my skin feel so smooth. All Image products are vegan. When I had dark spots I use Roden + Fields REVERSE Broad Spectrum SPF 50+ Sunscreen, it really vanquished them!

At night, after cleaning and toning I've been using L'Occitane's Immortelle Overnight Reset Serum followed by the Immortelle Youth Oil.  I used to be scared of putting oil on my face but it really penetrates so much deeper than cream so you are reaping the benefits.

BODY CARE

In the shower I use my own homemade soap (available on my Etsy store) for cleaning but for moisture and shaving I LOVE L'Occitane's Almond Shower Oil. I also have been using the Delicious Scrub from their Almond collection as well, makes me feel so silky!!!

After I get out I like to spray some of L'Occitane's Almond Skin Oil in my hand and mix it with whatever moisturizer I'm currently using. I love Loccitane Almond Milk Concentrate or Milk Veil, also the scented lotions are amazing, EO's body lotion, Nature's Gate Hemp lotion.

For hands, I haven't found a better hand cream than L'Occitane's 20% Shea butter but the original contains honey. The Rose scented 20% Shea does not contain honey and neither does the Almond hand cream which is also a fave of mine!

For feet I am loving the new 25% Shea butter foot cream from L'Occitane! I wish it had the essential oils the old one did but am happy it doesn't have the honey that the 25% shea hand cream has!

In terms of perfume daily I use a doTERRA roll-on called "Motivate" not only because it smells heavenly but also because it really uplifts my mood and gets me moving!
When I want a perfume I reach for my L'Occitane Terre de Lumiere L'Eau or Rose EDT.

HAIR CARE

I still use my hemp shampoo bar every couple of weeks as my only form of shampoo, available on Etsy. I usually just use some good quality Argan oil (Maple Holistics brand) instead of conditioner. I just work it into the ends and then work it up. I also love L'Occitane's Reparing Hair Oil that contains argan oil.

Sometimes I feel like using real conditioner. I love L'Occitane's 1 Minute Intensive Care Conditioner and DeLorenzo's (only available in Australia) "The Ends" Leave in Conditioner. I've also love just using a homemade mask of organic coconut oil and rosemary essential oil and leaving it on my hair for an hour or so before washing out. It can take a couple of washes sometimes but is well work it!

On the rare occasion I style my hair and need some setting products I always go to Pureology first because the quality is great, the smell is great and it's 100% vegan! I've used the hair spray and mousse which are great.

NOTE: I am not paid by any of these brands to advertise, these just the brands I use and love.

DIY Lash Serum

I had read a few different recipes online about DIY lash serums. All the commercial ones that seem to work are not vegan. So I decided to combine a few recipes and create my own. The key seems to be the castor oil which helps with hair regrowth and strength, as does certain essential oils such as lavender and cedar wood. Vitamin E & Coconut Oil are for conditioning.   The I bought an empty mascara wand online (which took forever to ship!) but you can just as easily use an oil brush or dropper and apply with your fingers or a cotton bud. Honestly I think that';s better anyway as you only need to get your lash line, not your whole lash. It is oily so feels a bit weird the first few times you use it and I recommend using a pillow case you don't care about. I spoke to a friend who did it just with castor oil and she said it definitely works (her lashes are amazing) but that it can take 6 months of doing it every day to start seeing results...so don't give up!! I promise to post results once I see them!

DIY Lash Serum

Ingredients

2 tsp Coconut Oil (melted)
2 Tbls Castor Oil
2 tsp Vitamin E
8-10 drops Lavender (and/or cedar wood) essential oil

Method

Add all ingredients into small bowl and mix well.
Drop slowly into a glass dropper or mascara container.
Apply to base of eyelashes and eyebrows at night.

Inika Organic Cosmetics Australia

I'd like to take a minute to talk about Inika Organic Cosmetics Australia. I LOVED this 100% vegan, cruelty free and organic brand when I lived in Australia but since moving to the States found it difficult to source. But not any longer!! It's is now available in the States, link here!! I just got my order which came with a free mascara (worth $33 and winner of the 2018 Glamour Beauty Awards)!!
One of my favorite of their products is the Primer but I just finished it and had already bought at Arbonne one, which is my second favourite. Seriously this line of cosmetics is such great quality, you can really feel the difference and it lasts for ages.

Here are my newly acquired products plus my old; Bronzer (Sunloving 03) which I love for contouring my cheekbones & lovely matte Mineral Eyeshadow (Coco Motion 16).

My recently USA purchase! Concealer (Light), Liquid Eyeliner (Brown) and free Long Lash Mascara (Black)

Some information about the company...

I'm notoriously bad at applying liquid eyeliner but this is the brown and I like that the applicator was hard and not like a brush so easier to get accurate lines.

DIY Deodorant

My BFF gave me this recipe and the original is from Wellness Mama. I changed the oil to Shea butter as the coconut oil was two liquidy, but use that if that is the consistency you're after! I think Lemon and Lavender are a great essential oil combination for deodorant but you don't want more than 10-15 drops total or it will be too harsh on the skin. doTERRA Purify blend is a great one too! You can use an old deodorant stick container or just use a glass jar.
If you leave it in the refrigerator it will act like regular stick deodorant, if you have it at room temperature it crumbles a bit and you have to put it on my hand. I found this easiest anyway; take an amount around 1/2 tsp and hold on armpit until the Shea butter melts a little then you can rub it clear into the skin. I found this deodorant worked really well with or without essential oils. Just be careful of which ones you use, on my first try I used eucalyptus EO and it gave me a rash.

DIY Deodorant

Ingredients

6 Tbls Shea Butter (around 75g) - I use raw unrefined
1/4 cup baking soda
1/4 cup arrowroot flour
Essential oils (optional-around 10-15 drops)*
Vitamin E (optional - 5 drops)

Method

Melt the Shea butter in a small sauce pan or stainless steel bowl over a low heat until completely melted.
Whisk in the other ingredients and pour immediately into desired container and place in refrigerator for an hour to set.

*Some essential oils are are great natural deodorizers are;
  • lemongrass.
  • thyme.
  • lavender.
  • tea tree or eucalyptus. (personally this gives me a rash)
  • rosemary.
  • geranium.
  • lemon.
  • I use doTERRA Purify & Lavender

DIY Beach Hair Spray

Recently got the chop and needed something to aid my natural curl. My first attempt is this spray based on a recipe from Wellness Mama. I found the Himalayan salt didn't melt into the mixture so next time I'll use kosher salt or leave it out completely. It doe make your hair a bit dry and slightly crunchy so I also used a little bit of Pureology Smooth Perfection serum to define the waves and lose the frizz.I'll try a different recipe next when I run out to see the difference. You'll need a spray bottle that holds around 10oz. Bottle from SKS Bottle Packaging Inc.

DIY Beach Hair Spray

Ingredients

1 cup of distilled water
2 tablespoons epsom salts
1/2 tsp Himalayan or Sea Salt (optional but adds stiffness)
1 teaspoon aloe vera gel
2 drops of jojoba or almond oil (or conditioner)
5 drops essential oil (I used tea tree essential oil)

Method

Heat the distilled water and add the epsom salts & sea salt (optional), until salts have dissolved completely.
Add in aloe vera gel and oils and mix well.
Allow mixture to cool before adding it to your spray bottle.
Shake before each use.
Should last up to 4 months.
